Peter Funch : Babel Tales

Place your tripod in one spot, snap images of people doing the same activity or with something in common. That's what Peter Funch did in New York. At a first glance, it looks as it's a stage event but its actually a painstaking montage process. Below is my favorite. More on V1 gallery. Peter Funch Website.

27025 shots

No, I did not shoot 27k+ pics in this trip. That's my total shutter counts since the D90 is purchased. 11 days and 23G of images, took me almost 3 weeks to process. Every trip is a challenge, trying to get the most out of each and every day. In a foreign country, you are constantly bombarded with new sight. Somehow each and every building seems so unique. Even the old man on a bicycle looks interesting.

Travel is all about experiencing new boundaries. Some bring back tons of clothing, food and souvenirs. We bring back tons of images.

ARTSingapore2009

This year ARTSingapore features a new section, Asia International Photography Fair (AIPF 2009). The main objective of AIPF is to showcase photography as a mainstream artform. Was expecting to view works from photographers in this region, yet most are from USA.

Sealey Brandt, the only photographer from Singapore, specialize in B&W portraiture.

Walking into another section, featuring lots of contemporary artworks from galleries.

Luxmen X6 LED

Seen here is the Luxmen X6 led light. Operated on 4x AA batteries, it provides even illumination up to 4 feet. The light also come with a tilt head and and dimmer. As compare to Lite panel, the design is much bulkier but feels more sturdy. With half the price of Lite Panel, the Luxmen is definitely a good buy.

Nikon Singapore

Visited Nikon Singapore, located right in the heart of the city.

To my disappointment, the lens are all kept in the display shelves. Wouldn't it be great if the lens are mounted on the camera for hands on? If you have the chance, visit the Nikon showrooms in Japan, its worth the trip!

The view on the other end offers little consolation.

Capturing the moments

Is baby photography challenging? You bet! Every baby has their own character. Some hates the camera, other tends to cry more than smile. We have our fair share of experience.

Baby have relatively short attention span, meaning you have to know when they perform best! Scheduling a shoot during their daily nap time spells disasters!
90% of the time, she is either looking at the wrong direction, giving the wrong expressions or simply not in the mood. Thus a good picture out of 50 shots is considered a norm.

Studio shoot: A preview

Today it's the pro who takes over the documentation process.
White balancing before the photoshoot.

The Lightroom application is one of the best photo management application around. You are able to preview and make quick selection of the photo.

All girls are vain!

Surprised results often comes from unplanned shots!

Printed the raw images for a quick preview.

Just 35mm

Today, the kit len stays home and we shoot with only the 35mm. 35 means 50mm on the D90 and everything seems so tight and you have to move around quite a bit.

even the reflection looks so crystal clear!

she looks like a 2yrs old in this photo!

rare pic of me with the baby! There's this cafe (TCC) at Robertson Quay where you can enjoy yr cuppa while sitting in one of these.

we had one of the most expensive and smallest portion of Korean BBQ!

some cosy bar beside The Gallery Hotel.

Further down, a new cafe. Seems to be run by Japs. There seems to be a Jap community living around this area, very likely all expats.

Some warehouse turned shop houses but yet occupied. Fancy that penthouse with a spiral to the rooftop?

Not much of distortion on the edges as seen here. Thumbs up again.

focused sharpest at the center.

Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G DX test shots

With the in built motor, the focusing is fast and very silent. Compared to my old 35-70mm F3.3-4.5, the lens allows 4 times as much lights into the camera. So you get the picture, everything seems so clear now!

The lens perform very well under day light with most sharpness at the center of the lens.

great color contract even on neutrals.

Shot with available lighting, I am able to obtain sharp images on the performers at ISO800.

Macro wasn't that great. The 35mm is never meant for macro but does well with food shots.

On DX camera, the 35mm works like the 50mm. Great for portraiture with nice bokeh.

Of course, this is the reason of getting this lens.
