Japan Day 12: Tsujiki Fish Market

Tsujiki Fish Market

Woke up a bit late. By the time I reached the metro, its already 6am. The real action of the tuna starts at 5am. Read that the auction is closed to visitors, so not sure how much you can see. Read some review here.

Food stores opens early for breakfast.

There are a handfuls of sushi stores within the market.

Two of the best (according to review on the web). There are others with no queue if you are in a hurry.

The shops sits around 12 people. You can order from a Picture menu. For me, I just point to the counter.

As fresh as it gets. There are no pricelist and coloured plate for reference.

Mine was $3000 yen for 6 assorted sushi. So far the most expensive paid meal in Japan.

The sushi street. Not sure how to reach the market from the metro? Just follow the men in rubber boots or baskets.

Watch out for these motorized vehicle. Some drives like F1.

After auction, the fishes are carried to the respective stores.

Stores preparing the tuna for retail.

Fishes are packed into boxes, ready for delivery.

Although people are well dressed in Tokyo, pls do not wear your best here and avoid slippery shoes.

Women are a rare sight in the market.

Fresh Tuna.

Tons of styrofoam box.

at 9am, the queue starts to form and mostly are foreigners.

There's a coffee shop between the sushi store. $400 yen.

More images on
Ikebukuro (池袋). We have Parco, Seiyu on the East and Tobu on the West.

For the camera
enthusiastic, there's Bic camera

taxi from
Ikebukuro station to Sunshine 60 is $660 yen, thats the starting fare for Tokyo taxi.

Last minute shopping inside the airport immigration. You can find common Japanese souvenir less tax. The good thing in Japan is the prices are controlled. A box of biscuit cost the same in the airport, in the shopping center and on the streets.

7 hrs of flight home. Goodbye Japan....
